SCOUTS HAVE FUN PUTTING THEIR SKILLS INTO ACTION BY PLAYING LASSOING THE STEER

The bowline forms a fixed loop at the end of a line. Easy to tie, even after undergoing a lot of strain, it’s often referred to as the “King of Knots.”

The bowline forms a fixed loop at the end of a line. Easy to tie, even after undergoing a lot of strain, it’s often referred to as the “King of Knots.” In addition to serving as a rescue knot when tied around the waist, the bowline has many uses as a small loop at the end of a line that doesn’t slip.

Required for Second Class, the bowline should be in every Scout’s outdoor skills toolbox. View How to Tie a Bowline video: https://youtu.be/6TOiH3Xj3y4?si=zm9f7GoZVL-T8t9p

LASSOING THE STEER

Once Scouts have learned to tie a bowline by putting a small, fixed loop at the end of a line, they can have fun playing Lassoing the Steer. You’ll need a  20-foot rope for each Scout, and a small log at least 4-inches in diameter with one end cut so it can stand upright. The small log is placed in the center of a well-defined circle about 18 feet in diameter.

On signal, all Scouts make a lasso by extending a bight of the rope’s standing part through the small fixed loop of their bowline. All those unable to tie a lasso in this fashion have to drop out until their lasso is formed correctly using the small bowline.

Scouts stand outside the edge of the circle, and throw their ropes attempting to lasso the “steer” and pull it out. Scouts can have as many throws as needed to rope the “steer.” Depending on the number of participants, Scouts can take turns. Patrols can be awarded points each time one of their members ropes the “steer” and pulls it out of the circle.
