Team Building Opportunity – Island Hopping

SCOUTS HAVE FUN DEVELOPING TEAMWORK BY PLAYING ISLAND HOPPING

Island Hopping is a race requiring a coordinated effort as well as speed. Once the technique is mastered, seeing how fast you can go and racing is also lots of fun!

Two sheets of 8-1/2 x 11 inch paper are given to each Scout—one for each foot. These are placed on the ground, perpendicular to a finish line. Each team is given one extra sheet which is placed unused at the rear of the line. (Thin sheets of plywood cut in squares can be substituted for the sheets of paper.)

On signal, the extra sheet is passed up the line from the last Scout to the first, who places the sheet down in front of them and steps onto it with their rear foot. Each Scout in line advances by moving their rear forward to the newly-vacated sheet ahead of them.

The remaining empty sheet is passed forward and the process is repeated. If a Scout steps off a sheet of paper, the entire patrol must move back and start over. The first team that crosses the finish line is the winner.
